Australia Day Medallion:
Father Tom O’Connell, Lissereen Abbeydorney, Trafalgar’s Catholic parish priest, was awarded the Australia Day Medallion on Australia Day at West Gippsland Arts Centre. Since arriving as parish priest in Trafalgar 26 years ago Father Tom, as he is popularly known, has been a tireless community worker throughout the district, he is one of those rare members of a community who has positively impacted on every person he has come into contact with. His commitment to the local community goes well beyond his duties as a priest.Father Tom has been a strong supporter of both youth and the elderly in Trafalgar. However there are two features of his life that stand out in the local community, his willingness to work across religious boundaries and his support for the sick, he is a regular visitor at local hospitals and is known for his willingness to visit the ill at home at any time. A cheery hello and a broad smile are the trademarks of this visitor. While he is a Catholic priest Father Tom has always extended a welcoming hand to everyone and has played an important role is drawing the different faiths in Trafalgar together.
